“Do you think we should get married here?”

by Kenneth Newhams on July 3, 2010

isoldarosegargen20100701_2172 Perhaps, the couple in the Rose Garden is wondering what the view will be next June when they get married by the Lake. The Rose Garden will be there but it is not likely the Polish owned Isolda will be in town.

She was at anchor off the Duluth piers on July 1st when they were checking out the location.

The Islolda came into port later that day to load durum wheat at the CHS terminal in Superior. She is a Polish ship owned by the Polish Steamship Company located in the port of Szczecin, Poland. Her crew is also Polish. They will take the wheat to Algeria where it is often used to make couscous, a dish that can include a variety of other ingredients including lamb, beef and vegetables.

Great picture of the Isoplda! Really enjoyed the map showing the destination.

Ken – the schedule indicates the Isolda left port at 7:23 this morning. The current Canal Cam shows a salty anchored – did she receive a partial load, or how often does this happen ?

Jeff,
not very often; she was replaced by the J. W. Shelley; when the Shelley is done, the Isolda will return; not sure why but probably a technical issue regarding contracts

If you click the link to the Isolda page in your story, it states that the ship flies under the Cyprus flag. Is this a typo, or old info, or is it accurate? If accurate, how does international shipping work? Is it unusual for a ship owned and operated a company in one country, and even with the crew from that company, but to have the flag from elsewhere?

Thanks!

Matt
Most salt water ships fly what is called a flag of convenience and it is rarely connected to the owner of the ship or the crew. The flag indicates the country where the ship is registered and is often simply the cheapest or most convenient country that provides the service. It is a little like companies that incorporate in Delaware here but are usually located in another state.

Yes, on our Vista cruise tour on Friday, July 2 we got to see the “Isolda” up close and personal waving to the crew! The tour around the harbor was one of the definite highlights of our four day stay in the Duluth/North Shore area. The meteorological events of lake and land breezes evident were very fascinating for a geeky meteorologist like myself. ;-)
