| She was built in 1952 at Toledo, Ohio and lengthened by 120 feet at Fraser Shipyards in Superior in the winter of 1975-76. In the winter of 1980-81, she was converted to a self-unloading lake carrier, allowing her to greatly decrease the time it takes her to discharge her cargo. Without both these alterations, she would not likely be still working on the Great Lakes. She is one of 8 sister boats built in the early 1950's. All but one of them are still on the lakes. The one sister not upgraded, the J. L. Mauthe, is now a barge.
She started her life as the Edward B. Greene, sailing for Cleveland Cliffs. In 1985, when they got out of the shipping business, she was sold to Ford and became the Benson Ford. In 1989, Ford got out of the shipping business and she was sold to her current owner, Interlake Steamship Company. There she was named in honor of the wife of James R. Barker, Chairman of the Board and President of The Interlake Steamship Company.
