| The St. Clair is a self-unloader built in 1976 at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. She is 770 feet long and has 26 hatches that open into 5 cargo holds, providing a load capacity of 45,000 tons. She was a longer ship than many on the lakes when launched, a middle step toward the 1,000 footers that were to come the next year. The St. Clair has a 250-foot self-unloading boom above the deck that allows her to unload her own cargo. She regularly handles taconite, coal and limestone at a variety of Twin Ports docks. |
